Travel photo winners and the 100,000 Strong Foundation: the latest news in work, study and volunteer abroad.

Study Abroad News

• At the end of January, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced the launch of the 100,000 Foundation. The organization is based on the 100,000 Initiative, a program launched in 2010 to encourage American students to study abroad in China.

• However, while studying abroad through officially mandated university programs has long been the traditional route, there are other options for students who want to explore China academically.

Work Abroad News

• Inspired by their annual Expat Explorer surveys, HSBC has launched a site with “tips from expats, for expats.”

• We’re still loving all the news stories lately about expats changing the meaning of “volunteering overseas.” This article, about expats in Russia, is no exception.

• Singapore has long been an expat destination nation. That’s why it’s no surprise that expats are expected to soon outnumber locals in the island nation.

• And in other contentious news, Brits like France better than the United Kingdom. No, really.

Required Reading

• After an American tourist was killed in Turkey two weeks ago, commenters started asserting that she shouldn’t have been travelling alone. However, female travel bloggers such as Twenty-Something Travel and Legal Nomads have pointed out that the issue isn’t solo travel—violence against women is.

According to this survey, travelling makes you more desirable to potential mates. It’s probably not coming from the most scientifically accurate source, but hey, it works in our favour, so we’re going to embrace it.

Contests & Opportunities

• To be perfectly honest, The Big Blog Exchange’s website leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to explaining just what this opportunity is. However, they’re looking for 16 “adventurous bloggers,” and we suspect that some Verge Magazine readers probably fit the bill.  The competition starts March 1, 2013.

• The wait is finally over! Voting is now open for the shortlisted 2012 Travel Photo Challenge winners. To submit your ballot—and daydream about far-off locales—visit the photo gallery. Voting is open until February 15, 2013.
