American Field Service (AFS) Canada: Adults Go Abroad
Adults Go Abroad combines volunteer placements in a work environment with host family or work site accommodations, including participation in community activities allowing volunteers to live the cultural and socio-economic realities of their host country. Projects vary and include community development, education, social programmes, special skill development and wildlife restoration. All specifics - including assignments, orientations, logistics and activities - vary depending on the programme cycle. Projects vary by hosting country and participants' interests, and last between 5-6 months. A summer intensive programme of 3-7 weeks is also available.

Application process and requirements
A preliminary application form should be completed and submitted to begin the application process. Deadlines vary according to program, and these as well as other application details are available online. Each programme has a mandatory fundraising component in addition to the Participation Fee.
Many participants start off with little host country language experience. But before long they are able to communicate at a basic level~ and many participants are fluent by the end of the program.
