people and places: Children's health & social care in rural Nepal
To the north-east of the Kathmandu Valley, the village of Sermathang is a predominantly Buddhist community, where local people are committed to regenerating their health care centre and school. Both were forcibly closed about a decade ago during the Maoist conflict, and with the reopening of the school in 2009, the school is already welcoming volunteers. Yangrima School cares for nearly 150 children, 40 of whom are boarders, living in rudimentary school accommodation during the week. The teachers are dedicated to the wellbeing and development of the children in their care, but have had little or no healthcare training. Volunteers will work alongside local women and the school teachers to share essential healthcare skills for the village. This will be very much a hands-on role. Volunteers will need to be able to work with little or no equipment and have the ability to share simple but life-saving knowledge and techniques. Volunteers will also work with the children and staff out of hours at the boarding hostel. Any of the following volunteer skills and experience have been identified by the community as being needed to move this project forward: • healthcare practitioners • early childhood development practitioners • paediatric nurses • health and social care workers to work with the children and staff at the hostel • first aiders • midwives and doulas • nutritionists • health visitors. The communities for miles around the village are completely committed to the school and the children's care, making this placement perfect for the volunteer who wants to thoroughly immerse themselves in rural life. The villagers will share their every day life and spiritualism with you. Conditions are simple, but the community will do all they can to welcome you.
