Empower And Care Organization (EACO): Volunteering in Uganda
Volunteers can become involved in a range of programs that appeal to your personal interests as some of the projects run in the morning and the afternoons only. If you are unsure of which project you would like to become involved with, you can spend a few days visiting each of the different groups to find out more about what each does in both rural and urban. There are vast opportunities including:-Training in Agriculture like giving our clients new modern technology, Food security, Bee keeping and others - HIV care and counseling. - Delivering support, materials and writing reports on EACO project progress. -Teaching at schools and co-coordinating peer education projects. -Assisting with administration. -Delivering training to staff and volunteers on relevant issues. -Assisting with building projects. -Writing grant proposals, helping EACO in fundraisings, Sensitizing the community about Health and sanitation. Once volunteers have picked interest in EACO, they live in Mukono town because it is secure and there is a guest house which can accommodate them. Qualifications: EACO particularly welcomes skilled professionals that can help the organization to improve and develop, but EACO welcomes the enthusiasm and commitment of all willing volunteers. EACO is committed to ensuring all voluntary experiences are as mutually beneficial as possible, and can find accommodation with local families or in guest houses. Regardless of the duration of your time, EACO will welcome you as one of the family, and give you the chance to make life-long friends in the community, REALLY make a difference, and work with a truly inspirational community based organization.
Health Requirements: Volunteers must take anti-malaria pills.
Equipment/Clothing: Suitable clothes for hot/rainy climate. EACO is a well respected organization, both in the community and internationally. We ask that volunteers are clean and presentable when undertaking their work in the community.
Insurance: Volunteer's responsibility.
When to Apply: Minimum of two weeks in advance.

Additional Location Information:
EACO's main office is located in Ggulu, Kitete, Mukono town, Mukono district, Central Uganda. EACO's projects are predominately rural, and the office is in a small village, 1 km from a larger Urban area, Mukono town. Mukono is 30minutes by bus from Kampala town.
SELECTION and SUPPORT
Interview: No interviews.
Training: Short-term volunteers train through working closely with local volunteers. Longer-term volunteers can benefit from the training that local volunteers receive, on counseling, HIV and other relevant topics.
Supervision: Volunteer are supervised by the organization director. When visiting rural areas and schools the volunteer work in partnership with other local volunteers.
Accommodation: Mukono, EACO can arrange for volunteers to stay with a local family or in a guest house. In Maracha the volunteer must stay with the project co-ordinator in the area.
Debriefing and Certificates: Participants can request a written reference.
Disabled Policy: We can accept volunteers with a disability depending on the disability.
Child Protection Policy: This organization has a Child Protection Policy
Liability Insurance: Volunteers are not covered by liability insurance
There is no obligation on volunteers to bring any of the items on your wish list but we want to give people the option.
As a community based organisation developed by and for Ugandans, EACO has to work gain the funding required to run it's projects.
- Education and poverty go hand in hand, and many of the young people EACO work with don't have the fees or opportunity to go to school. By donating just £10 you can pay for a Ugandan child to attend a government school for 1 year.
-EACO has had a huge impact on the local community through income generating activities, that alleviate families from poverty, and provide them with the skills, motivation and support to positively change their lives and communities. These projects are relatively inexpensive and are a lasting contribution in the lives of vulnerable families. EACO's clients lack basic necessities, such as clothes and utensils. EACO welcomes any donations big or small. Like clothes, shoes, books, computers for our internet café and we use this internet café to generate income which is used to support our on going activities, gifts for children, blankets, mattresses and so on
