Why British Food is the Best

Hannah shares some of the food that's fuelled her study sessions abroad.

I have got to say one of the highlights of my study abroad year in England is the food. There is definitely going to be some withdrawal panics when I have to return home.

There is something extremely comforting about British food; maybe because it's designed for a colder climate so you have to have something that's really going to warm you up. However, there are also some British classics that I have just fallen in love with, partially because of the memories and people associated with them.  

Here are a few of my favourites:

1. Chocolate Digestive Biscuits

If there is one thing that the British do well, it is biscuits. This is probably because they so often accompany tea, which is another thing the British excel at. 

Chocolate digestives are my favourite. They are have a nutty tasting base with a thin smooth layer of milk chocolate. They are perfecting for dunking into tea or eating on their own.

2. Crumpets

While we do have these at home, in my opinion the British do it so much better. Theirs are fluffy and doughy and just taste better, okay? Maybe it's because I'm eating them in England, I'm not sure, but anyway they are a must on any student's shopping list. Eat them with butter, jam or, my personal favourite, golden syrup.

3. Yorkshire Puddings

If you are not British, or don't have British parents you probably won't know what a Yorkshire pudding is. I was very lucky to discover them on my first trip to England at the age of five and have been obsessed with them ever since.

This is a bread-like thing that's crispy on the outside but soft in the middle, and usually accompanies a roast meal. They are perfect for soaking up gravy. (Don't be confused, pudding doesn't always mean sweet in the UK.) You also have to try one in York, the home of the Yorkshire pudding, as it was one of the best I have ever had.

4. Pork Pies

These are the holy grail of British food. These are a deli snack, with cold cured pork in the middle and the most delicious pastry crust on the outside. They are considered a British classic and are sold at most supermarkets. (However, only buy the Melton Mowbray ones and the snack size is the best, more pastry in my opinion.)

5. Milka Oreo Chocolate

Now this technically isn't British, but it's European, so bear with me. I first discovered this one on a trip to Amsterdam. Maybe you have something similar in other places in the world but I had never seen this before. It is an Oreo squished between two layers of delicious milk chocolate. Don't get me wrong, it's not like an actual Oreo but it's been squished into the shape of a block of chocolate. It's delicious. I always grab some when I'm in Europe and it's especially great because they sell it in duty-free in massive blocks!
