The degree, which appears to be the first of its kind in the world, falls under the Department of Geography, Geology and Planning and will be available starting in September 2010.

Geotourism is a term that was coined by National Geographic’s Center for Sustainble Destinations, and it means – in a nutshell – responsible tourism. On its site, the center defines geotourism as “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.”

The program was designed by two faculty members at the university who worked closely with the National Geographic Society.

It would be interesting to hear suggestions from the university on what kind of careers graduates can pursue with such a degree. We would love to hear from any students thinking about – or already enrolled – in the geotourism program, or if anyone knows of similar programs elsewhere.
